Fort Island Gulf Beach remains open for swimming

The Citrus County Environmental Health Department said today that bacterial samples at the Ft. Island Gulf Beach Park remained in the acceptable range in the most recent tests.

That means the county park beach remains open for swimming until at least late next week when sampling will be done again.

The beach had been closed to swimming a few weeks ago due to unacceptable bacterial readings.

For more information about water quality in relation to swimming, call the Citrus County Health Department at 352-527-5283, or for a more complete discussion of beach water quality, visit the Department of Health’s Internet Beach Water Quality website www.doh.state.fl.us, (Click on the drop down arrow next to “Choose Subject ” and then select “Beach Water Quality.”)

The county commission’s homepage, www.bocc.citrus.fl.us, also has a link on the right side of the page that connects to the actual test results page for the Health Department and tells if an advisory against swimming is in effect or not.

Stagnant water

The problem is caused by birds. They congregate by the hundreds at the shoreline of the beach before or at sunrise, then fly east. It seems if the county installed a breach or pipes along the jetties, it would allow the free flow of water and flush the beach area. Just need to hope this doesn't cause some other problem, like excessive erosion.
