County facilities to be closed Labor Day...

All county offices and facilities, including the Lecanto Government Building, the courthouse, the Citrus County Resource Center and the county landfill, will be closed in observance of the Labor Day holiday on Monday, Sept. 6.

All county facilities will be open on the following day, Tuesday, Sept. 7, as usual.

The Citrus County Board of County Commissioners’ Extension Office in Lecanto will be hosting the Green Expo 2010 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, and the public is invited.

Social Security office at Resource Center closed on Labor Day...

The Social Security office in the Citrus County Resource Center at 2804 W. Marc Knighton Court in Lecanto will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of the Labor Day holiday.

The Social Security office at the Resource Center is normally open with a representative on site on Mondays and on Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will reopen as usual on Thursday, Sept. 9

Veterans' signs stolen...

In this day of high patriotism, one has to wonder why thieves want to steal.

As Commander of the Dunnellon VFW Post 7991 located at 3107 W. Dunnellon Road (County Road 488), it is so very hard to fathom why theives want to steal our "Breakfast" signs that we display for only three days twice a month to advertise our super breakfast.

We have had 8 signs stolen in the past two months.

Man burned at Progress Energy cement plant...

A man doing contract work at the Progress Energy cement plant was injured following a fire at approximately 11 a.m. today at the company's cement plant in Crystal River.

According to Mike Hughes, Progress Energy Florida spokesperson, the man was working for a contractor assisting with repairs when there was an electrical flash as he was working on or near an electrical panel.

County votes to halt privatization investigation process...

The Citrus County Commission today voted to halt the process that many in the county believe would lead to the privatization of all county utilities.

In a 3-2 vote, commissioners decided to halt the entire process after a citizen campaign, and citizen comments during the special meeting today. Voting against stopping the process were Commissioner Joe Meek and Commissioner John Thrumston.

Landfill closed on Labor Day, Sept. 6...

The Citrus County Central Landfill will be closed on Monday, Sept. 6, in observance of Labor Day.

It will open as usual on Tuesday, Sept. 7.

For more information about landfill hours, call 527-7670 during office hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, or go to the county’s Web site at www.bocc.citrus.fl.us.

'Grandparents Raising Children' to meet on Sept. 13...

The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Support Group will meet from 10 a.m. to noon at the Citrus County Resource Center on Monday, Sept. 13.

The support group is sponsored by Citrus County Support Services.

The group meets at the Resource Center on the first Monday of the month, but because of the Labor Day holiday, this meeting has been moved to the 13th.

The Citrus County Commission has proclaimed September as "Industry Appreciation Month" in Citrus County.

The annual events are sponsored by the Citrus County Chamber, the Economic Development Council and Visit Citrus.

Citrus County dedicates new fire truck to late volunteer photographer...

The Citrus County Commission on Aug. 24 dedicated the county's new aerial ladder fire truck to the memory of the late Jim Shields, and invited his family to accept a plaque in his honor.

Shields, a non fire-fighting volunteer, was a tireless chronicler of the Fire Services activity through his photography and videos.

Shields, 61, died Sept. 28, 2009 during a traffic accident.
