Citrus County Sheriff's Office officials continue their investigation into an incident that occurred early this morning on U.S. 19 near the Sonic drive-thru.
Shortly after 1 a.m., deputies were dispatched to this area regarding a suspicious person. The person, a white male, was jumping in and out of traffic.
After deputies confronted the subject, he brandished a weapon, a large knife, and the K-9 handler released K-9 deputy Mito to help apprehend the suspect. The man stabbed K-9 deputy Mito, then charged deputies with the knife. Shots were fired, and the man was killed.
No other deputies were injured in the attack.
K-9 deputy Mito was immediately transferred to the Dunnellon Animal Hospital, where Dr. Paul Mack performed emergency surgery. K-9 deputy Mito received a deep stab wound, which came within a half-inch of his heart. Dr. Mack was able to stop the bleeding to his wound, and in turn, saved the dog's life. K-9 deputy Mito received 30 internal stitches during the surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery.
Deputies had encountered the man earlier in the evening; however, he did not appear to pose a threat to himself or others. The man's name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
Due to the ongoing investigation, U.S. 19 near the Sonic was briefly closed to through traffic. Northbound traffic was diverted at S.E. Eighth Terrace to Seventh Avenue. Traffic has since been restored to normal.
The investigation into the shooting continues.
