Voters decide national, state, local races, issues

Citrus County voters let their voices be heard on candidates and state and local initiatives today.

In local races, the picture looks like this:

Jeff Dawsy beat back a challenge by Hank Hemrick to stay in the Citrus County's Sheriff's chair. Dawsy drew 50,083 votes to Hemrick's 25,107, or 66.6 percent of the vote to Hemrick's 33.3 percent.

In the race for property appraiser, Geoff Greene outdistanced Lenny Navickas 64.2 percent to 35.7, or 45,771 votes to 25,461.

In the races for county commission, seats up for grabs were in Districts 1, 3 and 5.

  • In District 1, Dennis Damato survived a challenge by Bernie Leven. Damato garnered 54.5 percent of the vote to Navickas' 45.4 percent. That translantes to 39,346 votes for Damato and 32,743 votes for Leven.
  • In District 3, Joe Meek bested Bud Sasada Jr. 60.9 percent to 39.0 percent, or 43,501 votes to 27,887.
  • In District 5, Winn Webb squeezed out a win over Ken Heimann, 547.7 percent to 45.2 percent. Webb gathered in 38,853 votes to Heimann's 32,103.

In city races:

  • In Inverness, Cabot McBride beat out Gertrude Zulinger for City Council Seat 4, 62.1 perent to 37.8 percent, or 1,828 votes to 1,113.
  • In Crysal River, City Council Seat 1 went to Paula Wheeler, who eeked out a win over challenger John Kostelnick, 828 votes to 701, or 54.1 percent to 45.8 percent.

In local initiatives:

  • Voters approved the idea of relocating some county government offices to Lecanto -- but just barely. The vote was 50.6 percent in favor to 49.3 percent against. Out of a total of 69,373 votes cast, 35,125 favored the referendum, compared to 34,248 against.
  • Crystal River: (Charter review). 75.4 percent said yes; 24.5 percent said no.
  • Crystal River: (Hire/Fire). 59.2 percent said yes; 40.7 percent said no.
  • Crystal River: (Errors). 85.4 percent said yes; 14.5 percent said no.
  • Crystal River: (Take-office date). 84.1 percent said yes; 15.8 percent said no.
