Lecanto Primary School project receives Community Education Grant

Lecanto Primary School will educate community members regarding efficient ways to conserve water in gardens or plantings around the home through a Community Education Grant from the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

Through a workshop, residents will learn about water conservation and techniques for rain barrel installation and care.

Dry weather caused by an extended cold snap this El Nino year has caused nearly tinder-dry conditions in Citrus County.

Those conditions have prompted Citrus County Fire Chief Larry Morabito to caution residents to check with state Forestry officials to see if therre's a Red Flag warning in effect befoe burning yard waste.

FDOT webinar open to public Wednesday in Lecanto

The Citrus County Commission will host a Webinar for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) at 2 p.m. on March 10 in Room 166 at the Lecanto Government Building to help educate residents on the 2060 Florida Transportation Plan (FTP).

FDOT officials say the transportation plan is of major importance because it serves as the guiding transportation policy document for the entire state.

County warns residents about water-testing marketing scams

After new complaints, the Citrus County Utilities Division is once again warning homeowners to protect themselves against unscrupulous companies who claim residents’ water is contaminated.

As was reported last summer, there are at least two companies issuing postcards in Citrus saying the company tried to contact residents, telling them they need to have their water tested within 72 hours.

CCSO recovers diver's body near Chazzahowitzka

Members of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office dive team have recovered the body of a 21-year-old Vero Beach man near Chassahowtzka.

The man, Joseph Michael Kelly, was diving with two friends on Saturday in an underwater cave near the Chassahowitzka River Campground at 8600 W. Miss Maggie Drive, when he failed to surface.

A Vero Beach diver has been reported lost in an underwater cave in Chassahowitzka.

Citrus County Sheriff's Office dispatchers got a call at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday about a 21-year-old who was free diving after dark with two other young men in an underwater cave near the Chassahowitzka River Campground.

The diver failed to surface. The other two divers are safe.

Ft. Island Gulf Beach closed to swimming

The Citrus County Parks and Recreation Division has closed Ft. Island Gulf Beach Park to swimming after the Citrus County Environmental Health Department issued an advisory for the beach, warning of high bacterial counts in water samples.

The samples showed enterococci bacteria counts were over the state standard.

A Beverly Hills home suffered fire damage shortly after midnight on Thursday.

No one was injured in the blaze at 27 Monroe St, which is a rental property.

CFCC Citrus to host hospice teleconference
